Wedding Crashers

A Fun Comedy

It's wedding season and that only means one thing.  John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy Grey (Vince Vaughn) are on the prowl in the 2005 hit movie “Wedding Crashers”.

Looking forward to weddings like most people anticipate the holidays, the pair tries to blend in at various nuptials and the receptions afterwards in order to meet unsuspecting ladies who happen to be caught up in the moment.  The scheme works like a charm until John is captivated by Claire Cleary (Rachel McAdams), a bridesmaid at her sister’s wedding and daughter of Secretary Cleary (Christopher Walken).

Seizing an opportunity to get closer to Claire, John convinces Jeremy (against his better judgment) to spend a few days at the Cleary’s estate.  Things aren’t easy for them.  John not only has to deal with Claire’s competitive and egotistic boyfriend Sack Lodge (Bradley Cooper) but he also has to contend with advances from Claire’s mother Kathleen (Jane Seymour).  Jeremy has problems of his own when Claire’s sister, Gloria (Isla Fisher) becomes a “stage five” clinger after a liaison during the wedding reception as well as having to deal with younger brother Todd (Keir O’Donnell).  Will John and Jeremy be able to find love or will their “crashing” days come back to haunt them?

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first started watching “Wedding Crashers”.  It’s one of those rare “rated R comedies”.  But I ended up really liking this one.  The story seemed realistic (who hasn’t had an unexpected guest show up at a wedding) and not only had comedic elements but there was also a touch of drama and romance as well.

The characters for the most part were likeable and funny.  However, I believe Isla Fisher as the crazed Gloria was one of the best parts of the film.  Is she really obsessive or is it a ploy?  Will Ferrell’s uncredited appearance as Chaz, the one who started the notorious wedding crashing, was also a highlight.  I think we’re starting to see a trend of having Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson (along with Ben Stiller) showing up in various movies together.  They all seem to have a good on-screen chemistry.

There were a couple of things that I thought could have been better.  Although he was playing a secondary character, Christopher Walken could have been utilized more.  He’s known for some of his over the top characters and I thought this would have worked well in the film.  The side story with Todd could have been played up more as well.  It didn’t seem to go anywhere after a while.

Is “Wedding Crashers” for everyone?  No.  The movie is probably not suitable for younger children or those who are easily offended.  However, if you’re looking for a few good laughs over the course of a couple hours, you might want to watch this one!
