Top Movies Of 2006

 

2006 saw the return of pirates and superheroes to the silver screen as well as plenty of action flicks, comedies and animated features.  However, ten movies pulled away from the rest of the pack by raking in hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office.  What were the ten highest grossing movies of 2006?

 

10.  Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) is the top driver in NASCAR but his status is challenged when Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen), a driver from Formula One, shows up on the scene.  Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” brought in just under $150 million at the box office.

 

 9.  Over the Hedge

R.J. (voice of Bruce Willis) is in big trouble with Vincent (voice of Nick Nolte) when he steals the bears food.  In order to save himself from Vincent’s wrath, R.J. plots to get a group of other animals to unwittingly help him replace the stolen stash.  Over the Hedge also featured the voices of Steve Carell (Hammy), William Shatner (Ozzie) and Wanda Sykes (Stella).  The animated film came in 9th with around $155 million.

 

 8.  Casino Royale

A new 007 (Daniel Craig) meant a new action packed Bond flick in 2006.  In Casino Royale, Bond’s work was cut out for him when he went toe to toe with Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen).  The movie made just over $155 million in theaters.

 

 7.  Happy Feet

This animated blockbuster told the story of Empire Penguins who use their singing voices to woo a mate.  But when Mumble (voice of Elijah Wood) finds his voice isn’t up to par, he realizes that he may have a hidden talent in tap dancing.  “Happy Feet” raked in over $178 million at the box office.

 

 6.  Ice Age 2: The Meltdown

Manny (voice of Ray Romano), Diego (voice of Denis Leary) and Sid (voice of John Leguizamo) were back in “Ice Age 2: The Meltdown”.  What would the animals do when they realize that the Ice Age has come to an end and the ice is melting?  This animated feature brought in just over $195 million in theaters.

 

 5.  Superman Returns

After leaving and visiting the remnants of Krypton, the man of steel returns to Earth and has to battle his arch nemesis Lex Luthor.  “Superman Returns”, which made around $200 million at the box office, starred Brandon Routh as Superman/Clark Kent, Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane and Kevin Spacey as Luthor.

 

 4.  The Da Vinci Code

A two thousand year old mystery may be revealed when Jacques Sauniere (Jean-Pierre Marielle) is found murdered inside the Louvre.  Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and Jacques’ granddaughter, Sophie (Audrey Tautou) must decipher the clues he’s left them while dealing with Captain Fache (Jean Reno) and the albino monk Silas (Paul Bettany).  “The Da Vinci Code” brought in over $215 million in theaters.

 

 3.  X-Men: The Last Stand

The heroes and villains must decide which side they’ll fight for when a “cure” for mutants is found.  X-Men: The Last Stand, which made over $230 million, starred Halle Berry (Storm), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Famke Janssen (Phoenix), Ian McKellan (Magneto) and Patrick Stewart (Xavier).

 

 2.  Cars

The year’s top animated movie made over $240 million at the box office.  Young hotshot Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) begins to see things differently when he’s held accountable for the damages he made in Radiator Springs.  “Cars” also featured the voices of Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt and Larry the Cable Guy.

 

 1.  Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Johnny Depp was back as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.  With the help of Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), the wily Captain Sparrow tries to outwit the sea’s legendary Davey Jones (Bill Nighy), to whom he owes a debt.  The action/adventure was tops at the box office for the year with over $420 million.

 

Several movies missed the top ten but still managed to bring in over $100 million while in theaters in 2006 including:  “Click” with Adam Sandler, “Mission: Impossible 3” with Tom Cruise, “Night at the Museum” with Ben Stiller, “Borat” with Sacha Baron Cohen, “The Devil Wears Prada” with Meryl Streep, “The Departed” with Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Break-Up with Jennifer Aniston and the “Pursuit of Happyness” with Will Smith.
