My Take:
When most film fans list their favorite soundtracks, “Saturday Night Fever” ultimately ends up on the list. The soundtrack “gets into the groove” with the disco anthem “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees and immediately goes into the ballad “How Deep Is Your Love” and the danceable “Night Fever” and “More Than a Woman”, all tunes from the Brothers Gibb. Yvonne Elliman’s assertive vocal on “If I Can’t Have You” is next followed by the upbeat instrumental “A Fifth of Beethoven” by Walter Murphy. The Tavares put a different spin on “More Than a Woman” which is followed by the upswing beat of a musical orchestra on “Manhattan Skyline” by David Shire. Two more instrumental tracks are next with the funky “Calypso Breakdown” by Ralph McDonald and the adventurous sound of “Night on
Best Track:
How do you pick a favorite song from a soundtrack that helped to define the ‘70’s disco era? There were plenty of songs that I really like from the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack. “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees has to be one of my favorites just for being one of the top disco anthems of all time. Their harmonies on “How Deep Is Your Love”, the opening beat on “Jive Talkin’” as well as the vocals and the music for “You Should Be Dancing” are all highlights to the soundtrack. I also have to list K.C. and the Sunshine Band’s “Boogie Shoes” and the Trammps’ “Disco Inferno” as two of my favorites from the soundtrack. Not only are they “funky” and fun to dance to, but catchy as well. (Who doesn’t know “Disco Inferno” just as soon as they hear the first opening bars to the song?!)
