My Take:
The soundtrack for “Moulin Rouge!” is filled with plenty of new music and revitalized old favorites. The CD starts off with the theatrical feel of David Bowie’s “Nature Boy” and quickly supercharges things with the remake of the disco classic “Lady Marmalade”, this time by the foursome comprised of Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya and Pink. The drums come into play in the mostly musical track of “Because We Can” by Fatboy Slim. This is followed by the jazzy feel of “Sparkling Diamonds” by Nicole Kidman, Jim Broadbent, Natalie Mendoza, Lara Mulcahy and Caroline O’Connor. The track is actually an updated mix of the classic film song “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” and Madonna’s hit single “Material Girl”. “Rhythm of the Night” is another funky dance remake by Valeria. The soulful “Your Song” performed by Ewan McGregor and Alessandro Safina is next followed by the rock inspired “Children of the Revolution” featuring Bono, Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer. “One Day I’ll Fly Away” with Nicole Kidman has a big band feel while “Diamond Dogs” by Beck has a keen mix of various sounds. “Elephant Love Medley” features movie lines from the film as well as a medley of songs performed by Kidman, McGregor and Jamie Allen including “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, “Heroes”, “I Will Always Love You”, “One More Night”, “Pride (In the Name of Love)”, , “Silly Love Songs”, “Up Where We Belong”, and “Your Song”. Next is the powerful ballad “Come What May” with Kidman and McGregor followed by “El Tango De Roxanne”, a Spanish flavored dramatic remake of the Police’s “Roxanne”, this time performed by McGregor, Jose Feliciano and Jacek Koman. “Complainte De La Butte” adds a calmer feel to the CD with melodic vocals accompanied by piano. Kidman returns with John Leguizamo and Alka Yagnik in “Hindi Sad Diamonds” which has a dramatic mix of modern and an almost psychedelic beat. The soundtrack ends with a second version of “Nature Boy”, this time with a funky music intro by Massive Attack.
Best Track:
There were plenty of feel good, dance tracks on this one. There were three songs in particular that I thought were great. The first would be “Lady Marmalade”. Not only were the vocals superb but the accompanying music was also a highlight. It just sounds good! “Diamond Dogs” by Beck would be my next choice. It had a cool blend of nature sounds with a unique techno feel. It’s definitely different than the other songs on the CD. My third choice would be “Come What May” by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. It has a flare of the dramatic and their voices seem to mesh together in particular, sort of unexplainable, way.
