Scary Movie Spoofs

The “Scary Movie” franchise has spoofed a number of cinema favorites since the first movie was released in 2000. The sequels have been no exception. What are some of the movies to be spoofed in the “Scary Movie” films?

Scary Movie (2000)

The first film had plenty of spoofs from “Scream” including an opening with Drew (Carmen Electra) reminiscent of the role that Drew Barrymore portrayed and the appearance of Ghost Face, the brutal killer. “Scream 2” was even spoofed during the scene with Brenda (Regina Hall) being attacked in the movie theater similar to the way Jada Pinkett Smith’s character was in the original film. The teenagers in “Scary Movie” accidentally hit someone with their car and ultimately dispose of the body similar to way the teens in “I Know What You Did Last Summer” did. Other movies spoofed include “The Blair Witch Project” when news reporter Gail (Cheri Oteri) is running through the woods, “The Usual Suspects” when the identity of the real killer is revealed, “The Matrix” during the battle between Cindy (Anna Faris) and the killer and an homage to “The Sixth Sense” when Shorty (Marlon Wayans) admits to seeing dead people.

Scary Movie 2 (2001)

The hi-jinx continued in this 2001 sequel. Cindy, Brenda, Shorty and Ray (Shawn Wayans) reprise their roles and find themselves battling supernatural forces in a haunted mansion ala “The Haunting”. “The Exorcism” is spoofed with Father Harris (Andy Richter) and Father McFeely (James Woods) performing an exorcism on a possessed girl named Megan Voorhees (Natasha Lyonne) at the beginning of the film. Other spoofs include “What Lies Beneath” during the “I think she suspects something” scene between Cindy, Ray and Professor Oldman (Tim Curry), “Charlie’s Angels” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” when Cindy, Brenda and Theo (Kathleen Robertson) confront Hanson (Chris Elliott) and “Hannibal” when Cindy watches Hanson open the top of Shorty’s head.

Scary Movie 3 (2003)

“The Ring” and “Signs” were two of the movies spoofed in 2003’s “Scary Movie 3”. The opening scene with Pamela Anderson and Jenny McCarthy spoofed the horror flick “The Ring” as did other scenes including the battle that Brenda has when the videotape airs. The sci-fi thriller “Signs” was spoofed with Charlie Sheen playing Tom, a former priest who loses his wife and then notices strange crop circles on his farm. Other spoofed movies include “The Others” when Tom asks where his daughter is, “8 Mile” with Simon Rex playing George, an aspiring rapper and an homage to “The Matrix” with Eddie Griffin as Orpheus, George Carlin as the Architect and Queen Latifah as the Oracle.

Scary Movie 4 (2006)

No movie is safe from being spoofed by “Scary Movie 4”. The movie starts off with a spoof from the movie “Saw”; except this time around it’s Dr. Phil and Shaquille O’Neal who are chained together. The alien tri-pods from “War of the Worlds” return with Craig Bierko spoofing the character played by Tom Cruise. We also see spoofs of “The Grudge” as well as the thriller “The Village”.
