They Played Together But Didn't Stay Together

Since the dawn of the motion picture industry, off screen couples have appeared on screen in a variety of films.  While some relationships have stood the test of time, others implode and leave the public unprepared for the saturation of news media, “he said, she said” headlines and tabloid rumors that follow.  Which married Hollywood couples have played together on screen but didn’t stay together once the filming rapped?

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise

This infamous couple starred in three films together.  The first, “Days of Thunder” was released in 1990.  This was followed by “Far and Away” in 1992 and “Eyes Wide Shut” in 1999.  Although Tom is a multiple Oscar nominee, Nicole won her “Best Actress Oscar” for “The Hours” after their divorce.

Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger

Oscar nominee Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger were married for almost nine years.  Kim won her “Best Supporting Actress” Oscar during this time for her role in “L.A. Confidential”.  The movie the pair worked on together?  1991’s “Marrying Man”.

Drew Barrymore and Tom Green

Another couple doing “double duty” by starring in two films together is Drew Barrymore and Tom Green.  The first was 2000’s “Charlie’s Angels”.  This was followed by “Freddie Got Fingered” which was released in 2001.

Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie

The tabloids had a field day when these two were married.  Billy Bob, best known for his role in “Sling Blade” and Angelina, an Oscar winner for “Girl Interrupted” both starred in the film “Pushing Tin” in 1999.

Madonna and Sean Penn

The pair’s four year marriage brought us the 1986 film “Shanghai Surprise”. Although Madonna’s movie career has had its ups and downs, she did receive a Golden Globe for her work in “Evita”.  After several nominations, Sean picked up his first Academy Award statuette for his role in “Mystic River”.

Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman

These two Oscar nominees met on the set of their 1997 movie “Gattaca”.  Married the following year, the pair split in 2004.

Patricia Arquette and Nicolas Cage

1999’s “Bringing Out the Dead” starred the real life husband and wife team of Patricia Arquette of “Stigmata” and “Little Nicky” fame and Nicolas Cage, Best Actor Oscar winner for “Leaving Las Vegas”.  The pair split two years later.

Jim Carrey and Lauren Holly

It wasn’t all laughs for this Hollywood couple.  The two starred in the 1994 comedy “Dumb and Dumber” prior to their marriage.

Vivien Leigh and Sir Laurence Olivier

The couple that first epitomized Hollywood royalty starred in the 1937 film “Fire Over England”.  Vivien went on to star in “Gone with the Wind” and “A Streetcar Named Desire”.  Sir Laurence Olivier is known for his roles in a number of movies including “Wuthering Heights”, “Othello” and “Rebecca”.

Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor

This infamous Hollywood couple married and divorced not once, but twice in the 1960s and 1970s.  Despite the catalog of work that each has accomplished, the pair is best known for 1964’s “Cleopatra”.
