On and Off Screen: Hollywood Couples That Made It Work

Although the pressures of Hollywood may wreak havoc on some celebrity relationships, not all of them fall by the wayside.  Some real life celebrity couples have been able to balance a personal and professional life while dealing with the stresses and scrutiny that fame brings with it.  Which couples have appeared on the big screen together and have maintained (so far) a successful marriage?

John Travolta and Kelly Preston

This couple first appeared together in the 1989 movie “Experts”.  Married since 1991, John Travolta and Kelly Preston also starred in the sci-fi flick “Battlefield Earth” in 2000.

Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas

Although they usually work on separate film projects, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas have also appeared in one film together.  The movie?  The critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated movie “Traffic”.

Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor

Married since 2000, this Hollywood couple has starred in two films together.  The first was 2001’s “Zoolander”, a comical look at the world of modeling.  The other film was 2004’s “Dodgeball” which found the couple playing on competing teams.

Courtney Cox and David Arquette

Courtney Cox and David Arquette first appeared together in the 1996 movie “Scream”.  They teamed again for the sequels, “Scream 2” in 1997 and “Scream 3” in 2000.  Their most recent collaborative effort was 2001’s “3000 Miles to Graceland”.

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe

Although Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe have been married since 1999, the pair has only starred in one movie together.  Their film, “Cruel Intentions”, was also released in 1999.

This renowned Hollywood couple wed in 1958.  Over the years, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward have starred in several movies together, including 1975’s “Drowning Pool”, “Harry and Son” in 1984 and the recent “Empire Falls”.

Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart

Who hasn’t heard of Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart?  This infamous pair was married in 1945 until Humphrey’s death in 1957.  The two starred in 1944’s “To Have and Have Not”, “The Big Sleep” in 1946 and the 1947 movie “Dark Passage”.

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard

One of the cinema’s favorite actors, Clark Gable was married to actress Carole Lombard in 1939.  The two had originally worked on the 1932 film “No Man of Her Own”.  However, the couple’s marriage was short lived when Carole was killed in a plane crash in 1942.  When Clark Gable passed away in 1960, he was interred next to Carole at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA.
