My Super Ex-Girlfriend

A Different Kind Of Superhero Movie

Matt Saunders (Luke Wilson) hasn’t had much luck at love.  Things seem to change when he meets Jenny Johnson (Uma Thurman) on the subway.  However, Jenny isn’t the mousey, art gallery owner that she appears to be.  She’s actually G-Girl, a superhero who always seems to appear just in time to save the day.

All is well with the pair after Matt is cornered by Professor Bedlam (Eddie Izzard), a man who shares a past with G-Girl and knows her weaknesses, which causes Jenny to confess to Matt about her secret identity.  But when Matt starts to see how obsessive and jealous Jenny is when it comes to his friendship with co-worker Hannah (Anna Faris), he calls the relationship off.

Wrong move!  The enraged G-Girl is bent on revenge.  Matt must then endure G-Girl’s wrath by being embarrassed in the boardroom at work where his clothes suddenly disappear, having his car taken and then finding it orbiting the Earth and having just about everything thrown at him (except in this case, instead of the kitchen sink, it’s a live shark in his bedroom).  At his wit’s end, Matt enlists the aid of his last resort, Bedlam.  Will Matt be able to win against G-Girl?  What are Bedlam’s true intentions?  You’ll have to watch “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” to find out!

I liked the premise of this movie: a superhero who gets scorned, shows a “not so nice” side and is bent on using their powers to get revenge on the person who hurt them.  It’s definitely not your typical superhero movie!

The cast seemed to play really well off of each other, especially Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson.  Eddie Izzard was fun to watch as the not-so-evil Bedlam.  Wanda Sykes as Carla, Matt’s boss, who always seemed to be looking for a reason to bust his chops also added good comedic timing although she didn’t have much screen time.

I also liked the way the movie was campy in some ways.  There were two things that sort of reminded me of the old “Superman” films.  One was the thinly veiled disguise that Jenny wore.  Not only did she wear glasses but as Jenny, she also had a brown wig!  There was also the scene where she flew over the city with Matt.  (Remember Superman and Lois Lane?)

There was one thing I questioned more than anything else.  Why did they call her G-Girl?  Even though we get a back story as to how she got her superpowers (by touching a meteor), we’re never told why or if she picked this name or someone else did.

I thought a couple of things kept the film from being a really good one.  Some of the antics seemed to remind me of another “love gone wrong” movie from a few years ago, “Love Stinks”.  I also thought that some of the story, especially the scenario with Bedlam and G-Girl, was predictable, making the ending feel a little anti-climactic and almost flat.  However, I thought the saving grace at that point was with Anna Faris’ character, Hannah.

“My Super Ex-Girlfriend” is exactly what it’s meant to be: a fun movie that takes you away from reality for while.  Even with its flaws, you’ll find yourself laughing at the characters’ antics the entire time.

“My Super Ex-Girlfriend” runs around 95 minutes and is rated PG-13 for crude humor, language, brief nudity and sexual content.
