The Mummy Returns DVD Outtakes

This sequel to 1999’s blockbuster, “The Mummy”, picks up almost ten years after the end of the original story.  In “The Mummy Returns”, Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) are now married and have to save their son, Alex (Freddie Boath) while preventing a newly regenerated Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) from taking over the world.  The DVD is packed with bonus material including an outtakes reel with plenty of bloopers.  Here are some of the highlights!

Someone Give Him a Hand

Near the end of the movie, priest Baltus Hatez (Alun Armstrong) reaches inside one of the statues in the pyramid only to have his hand mangled in the process.   Watch this outtake as the skeletal hand falls apart in the middle of the scene!

It’s a Bird, It’ a Plane!

In the movie, Imhotep eliminates the goons that are shooting at Alex when he makes a daring escape attempt in Carnack.  However, in this original scene, keep an eye overhead.  You’ll get to see and hear the airplane that’s flying over!

There’s a Bright Side to Everything

Once they reach the pyramid at Ahm Shere, Evelyn is caught by surprise when Anck-Su-Namun (Patricia Velasquez) comes out of nowhere and suddenly stabs her.  During this scene, a dying Evelyn falls to her knees and immediately starts laughing.

I’m Giving Her All She’s Got, Captain!

Imhotep causes the hot air balloon that is carrying Rick, Evelyn, Jonathan (John Hannah) and Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr) to be destroyed.  Not only do you get to see the actual blue screen background, this outtake shows the actors (and one actress) pretending to be tossed around as one yells out a line that pays homage to “Star Trek”.

You Must Protect Me, Well On Second Thought…

When they are running from the mummified pygmies, Baltus Hatez tells two of his accompanying priests that they must sacrifice their lives for him.  That’s until one of the priests falls into the nearby bushes!

Catch Me if You Can

While on the hot air balloon, Evelyn, caught up in her memories of Nerfertiri, falls overboard but is caught by Rick.  Or was she?  The movie would have ended quite differently if this original scene was in the film.  When Evelyn falls overboard, Rick doesn’t catch her in time.
