The Men Behind Bond: Where Are They Now?

 

Super agent James Bond has been a favorite with movie fans since the 1960s.  Although the name has remained the same, the actors portraying 007 have changed throughout the years.  Who were the past Bonds and what are they doing now?

 

Sean Connery

The Scottish born actor appeared six films during his original foray as Bond, including “Dr. No” (1962) and “Diamonds are Forever” (1971).  He would return as 007 in the 1983 film “Never Say Never Again”.  After his stint as the secret agent Connery appeared in a number of films including the cult hit “Time Bandits” (1981), the 1986 “Highlander” movie and its 1991 sequel and received an Oscar for his work in the 1987 gangster film “The Untouchables”.  He also received a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Dr. Henry Jones in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989).  In the ‘90’s Connery starred in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (where he made an uncredited appearance as King Richard), as King Arthur in 1995’s “First Knight” with Richard Gere, the action flick “The Rock” (1996) with Nicolas Cage and in 1999’s “Entrapment” opposite Catherine Zeta Jones.  He would also receive the Cecil B. DeMille award at the 1996 Golden Globes for his contributions the movie industry.  Although he is currently semi-retired and enjoys a good game of golf, Connery did find time to star in 2003’s “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” as Allan Quatermain and received AFI’s 2006 Life Achievement Awards.  He is in talks to reprise his role as Indiana Jones’ father in the fourth installment of the franchise set to hit theaters in 2008.

 

George Lazenby

George Lazenby already had a distinguished career as a male model before donning the tuxedo to play James Bond in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” (1969).  Since then the Australian born actor has shown appeared in a number of commercials and TV shows including the daytime soap opera “General Hospital”, the drama “Hotel” and the popular “Baywatch”.  He also provided voiceovers for the animated series “Batman Beyond”.  In 2003 Lazenby co-starred in the comedy “Winter Break” and is currently retired from acting.

 

Roger Moore

From 1973’s “Live and Let Die” to 1985’s “A View to a Kill”, English actor Roger Moore starred as James Bond in a total of seven films.  Prior to obtaining his license to kill, Moore had starred as Simon Templar in the TV series “The Saint”.  During his tenure as Bond, Roger Moore appeared in 1981’s “Cannonball Run” (where he played a spoof of his 007 persona) and “Curse of the Pink Panther”.  In recent years Moore has appeared in the action-packed TV show “Alias” and on the silver screen in the 2002 comedy “Boat Trip” with Cuba Gooding Jr.  The actor stays busy with as a goodwill ambassador with UNICEF and is currently providing voiceovers for the upcoming animated feature “Agent Crush”.

 

Timothy Dalton

Welsh actor Timothy Dalton was already a star of stage and screen when he accepted the role of James Bond.  Dalton had appeared in “Flash Gordon” (1980) and a TV version of the classic tale “Jane Eyre” (1983) before starring in “The Living Daylights” (1987) and “Licence To Kill” (1989).  Since then Dalton has starred in the feature films “The Rocketeer” (1991), 1997’s “The Beautician and the Beast” with Fran Drescher and “Looney Tunes: Back in Action” (2003) with Brendan Fraser.  He also starred in the made for TV movies “Scarlett” (1994) and “Cleopatra” (1999).  He’ll next be seen in the upcoming “Hot Fuzz” (from the creators of Shaun of the Dead).

 

Pierce Brosnan

As the most recent 007, Pierce Brosnan starred in four of the franchise’s films including Goldeneye, “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997), The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day.  The Irish actor had been a successful actor before his 007 days, appearing in the hit TV show “Remington Steele”, the sci-fi movie “The Lawnmower Man” (1992) and the blockbuster comedy “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) with Robin Williams.  Between Bond films Brosnan starred in the disaster flick “Dante’s Peak” with Linda Hamilton and the 1999 remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair”.  Since leaving 007 behind, Brosnan has starred opposite Julianne Moore in “Laws of Attraction” (2004), “After the Sunset” (2004) with Salma Hayek and as a hit man in the 2005 comedy The Matador. Brosnan is currently working on several film projects including the drama “Marriage” co-starring Rachel McAdams and the sequel “Mrs. Doubtfire 2”.  The actor was recently the celebrity ambassador for EIF’s Lee National Denim Day.
