Memorable Movie Moms

 

From loveable to animated or from creepy to insane, mothers have been portrayed in a variety of ways in films.  We take a look at some of the films that showcase memorable movie moms, step-moms and our animated friends as well!

 

The Addams Family (1991)

The macabre is normal in the Addams’ household.  In 1991’s “Addams Family”, Gomez (Raul Julia) and Morticia (Anjelica Houston), along with their children Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) are reunited with Gomez’s brother Fester (Christopher Lloyd) whose been missing for over twenty-five years.  The Addams would return in “Addams Family Values” (1993) with an addition to their family, Pubert (played by Kaitlyn and Kristen Hooper).

 

Chocolat (2000)

Two mothers with problems were part of “Chocolat”.  The first is Vianne (Juliette Binoche) who constantly moves her young daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol) from town to town.  When they open a chocolate shop in a small French village, not only do they receive the ire of Paul (Alfred Molina), they develop a friendship with Armande (Judi Dench).  Armande is estranged from her daughter Caroline (Carrie-Anne Moss) and desperately wants to see her grandson Luc (Aurelien Parent Koenig).

 

Cinderella (1950)

Everyone knows this classic Disney tale.  Cinderella (voiced by Ilene Woods) endures the hardship brought upon her by her step-mother (voiced by Eleanor Audley) and her two step-sisters (voiced by Rhoda Williams and Lucille Bliss).  Will things change when Cinderella’s fairy godmother (voiced by Verna Felton) appears and she’s able to meet Prince Charming (voiced by William Phipps) at the ball?

 

The Divine Secrets Of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002)

Sidda (Sandra Bullock) is at odds with her mother Vivi (Ellen Burstyn).  But when Vivi’s friends, a.k.a. the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, intervene, Sidda begins to realize who her mother really is.

 

Freaky Friday (2003)

Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Anna (Lindsay Lohan) are constantly at odds with one another.  Things take an unexpected turn when the mother and daughter discover that they have switched bodies and each must deal with the others lifestyle for the day.

 

Friday The 13th (1980)

It’s been many years since the murders at Crystal Lake occurred.  But when the camp reopens, the murders start all over again.  Could the person behind the grisly murders be Jason, a young boy who presumably drowned at the lake?  Where does his mother, Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) play into all this?

 

Mask (1985)

“Mask” was based on a true story and starred Cher as Rusty, Eric Stoltz as her son Rocky and Sam Elliott as Gar.  Although Rocky has a severe facial deformity, Rusty is determined to that her son’s life will be as normal as possible.

 

Mommie Dearest (1981)

Faye Dunaway portrayed legendary actress Joan Crawford in “Mommie Dearest”.  Life is anything but rosy for the two children that the film starlet adopts.  Always remember: “No Wire Hangers!”

 

Postcards From The Edge (1990)

“Postcards from the Edge” was written by Carrie Fisher of “Star Wars” fame.  Suzanne (Meryl Streep) is a top Hollywood actress who is also a substance abuser.  At the threat of losing everything, Suzanne is forced to live with her mother, Doris (Shirley MacLaine), a former actress with problems of her own.

 

Psycho (1960)

Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) is obsessed with his mother in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film “Psycho”.  But is Norman’s mother the culprit behind murders at the Bates Motel?  You’ll have to wait until the end for this shocking surprise!

 

Serial Mom (1994)

What happens if your sweet mother turned out to be a serial killer?  This is what happens in “Serial Mom” starring Kathleen Turner as Beverly and Sam Waterston as Eugene.

 

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (1937)

Still one of Disney’s all-time greatest animated films, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” tells the story of Snow White (voiced by Adriana Caselotti) who flees from her step-mother, the evil Queen (voiced by Lucille La Verne).  Although she is taken in by seven dwarves, Snow White’s life is threatened when the Queen discovers her whereabouts.

 

Steel Magnolias (1989)

M’Lynn (Sally Field) has a beautiful daughter whom she loves and good friends.  But when things take a drastic turn in her life, it’s up to her friends to help her pick up the pieces.  “Steel Magnolias” also stars Olivia Dukakis, Darryl Hannah, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts.

 

The Step-Mom (1998)

Isabel (Julia Roberts) is the new woman in Luke’s (Ed Harris) life.  She not only has to cope with Luke’s two children, Anna (Jena Malone) and Ben (Liam Aiken), but she also has to deal with Jackie (Susan Sarandon), his ex-wife.

 

Terms Of Endearment (1983)

Aurora (Shirley MacLaine) and her daughter, Emma (Debra Winger) have a difficult relationship.  Will their relationship heal when Emma has trouble not only with her marriage but her health?

 

Throw Momma From The Train (1987)

Owen (Danny DeVito), a forty-something year old man, lives at home with his overbearing mother (played by Anne Ramsey).  Larry (Billy Crystal) is a novelist with writer’s block whose ex-wife, Margaret (Kate Mulgrew) has taken to the cleaners.  Mayhem ensues when Owen concocts a plan that involves Larry killing Owen’s mother if Owen gets rid of Margaret.

 

The Waterboy (1998)

Bobby Boucher (Adam Sandler) is a water boy for the college football team until he’s fired by Coach Beaulieu (Jerry Reed).  Things change when he’s picked up by Coach Klein (Henry Winkler) and it’s discovered that he has an uncanny knack for the sport.  However, Bobby is determined to keep his football playing a secret from his overprotective mother (Kathy Bates).
