Memorable Quotes from Christmas Movies and
It’s that time of year again where we dust off some of our favorite holiday movies and get geared up for the annual holiday specials. There have been plenty of lines from seasonal movies that immediately remind us of the scene that’s taking place. Here are a few “quotable quotes” to put you in the holiday spirit!
Willie (Billy Bob Thornton) dressed as Santa Claus tells the kid on his lap:
“Want to see some magic? OK! Let’s watch you disappear!”
After arriving at the mall, Therman, a.k.a. The Kid (Brett Kelly), tells Willie a.k.a. Santa Claus:
“…I want a gorilla named Davy for beating up the skateboard kids who pull on my underwear. He can take his orders from the talking walnut so it won’t be my bad thing.”
Therman is getting ready to go to bed and he says to Willie and Sue (Lauren Graham):
“Good night Santa! Good night Mrs. Santa’s sister!”
Therman opens up a section of his Advent calendar and finds a candy corn to which Willie responds:
“Well they can’t all be winners!”
Gin (Bernie Mac) is trying to make a deal with Willie and Marcus (Tony Cox). After every offer Marcus makes, Gin’s response is:
“Half!”
A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)
Near the beginning Linus (voice of Christopher Shea) says to Charlie Brown (voice of Peter Robbins):
“…out of all the Charlie Browns in the world you are the Charlie Browniest!”
Charlie Brown says when he realizes he didn’t receive a Christmas card:
“…I know nobody likes me. Why do we have to have a holiday season to emphasize it?”
Sally’s (voice of Kathy Steinberg) response to Charlie Brown when he complains about her letter to Santa Claus:
“…All I want is my fair share!”
Lucy’s (voice of Tracy Stratford) reaction to being kissed by Snoopy:
“…”I’ve been kissed by a dog!”…”
When the children see the little tree bent over in the snow, Linus says:
“I never thought it was such a bad little tree. It’s not bad at all really; maybe it just needs a little love.”
Ralphie’s dad (Darren McGavin) reads the word “fragile” that’s stamped on the side of the box containing his “major award” and says:
“Fra-geel-lay, it must be Italian.”
Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) is holding the hub cap with the nuts and bolts while his dad changes the car tire. Mr. Parker accidentally hits it and everything goes airborne. We hear a surprised Ralphie yell:
“Oh fudge!”
Schwartz (R.D. Robb) “triple-dog-dares” Flick (Scott Schwartz) to stick his tongue on the metal pole that’s in the schoolyard. We hear the narrator/an adult Ralphie (voice of Daniel Pinkwater) exclaim:
“Schwartz created a slight breach of etiquette by skipping the triple-dare and going right for the throat!”
Miss Shields (Tedde Moore) is talking to the class, trying to figure out who was behind the incident with Flick getting his tongue stuck to the metal pole. We hear the narrator say:
“Adults loved to say things like that but kids knew better. We knew darn well it was always better not to get caught.”
Ralphie tries out his Red Ryder BB Gun in the backyard on Christmas. When the gun misfires and hits him the voice of the narrator yells:
“Oh my god I shot my eye out!”
After listening to Audrey (Juliette Lewis) complain about having to share a room with Rusty (Johnny Galecki), Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo) exclaims:
“I don’t know what to say except it’s Christmas and we’re all in misery.”
Clark Griswold’s (
“…If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet I wouldn’t be more surprised than I am right now.”
Aunt Bethany’s (Mae Questel) response to being asked to say the grace before Christmas dinner:
“Grace? She passed away thirty years ago!”
Uncle Lewis’ (William Hickey) reaction to Aunt Bethany complaining about hearing a “funny squeaky sound”:
“You couldn’t hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerin plant!”
Ellen pleads with
“How could things get any worse? Take a look around, Ellen, we’re at the threshold of hell.”
After killing Takagi (James Shigeta), Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) says to the partygoers being held hostage:
“…alas your Mr. Takagi did not see it that way so he won’t be joining us for the rest of his life.”
After Al (Reginald Vel Johnson) realizes that things aren’t quite right, John (Bruce Willis) yells from the upper floor of the building:
“Welcome to the party pal!”
Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) tells Ginny (Dustyn Taylor) that John is still alive after seeing the angry reaction of the terrorists. When Ginny questions her, Holly responds:
“Only John can drive somebody that crazy!”
Introducing himself and his partner (Robert Davi) to Al and Deputy Police Chief Robinson (Paul Gleason), F.B.I. Agent Johnson (Grand L. Bush) exclaims:
“I’m agent Johnson. This is Special Agent Johnson. No relation.”
Hans is explaining to the others about blowing up the roof to the building and says:
“…by the time they work out what went wrong we’ll be sitting on a beach earning twenty percent!”
Buddy (Will Ferrell) tells Walter (James Caan) about his journey from the North Pole to
“I passed through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly-twirly gumdrops and then I walked through the Lincoln Tunnel.”
Buddy explains to his new found family:
“We elves like to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup!”
When Buddy realizes the Santa Claus at Gimbel’s (Artie Lange) is a fraud he yells:
“You sit on a throne of lies!”
After the altercation with Miles Finch (Peter Dinklage), Buddy exclaims:
“He’s an angry elf!”
Walter sends Buddy to the mailroom. When he gets his first glimpse of the place, Buddy’s reaction is:
“It’s just like Santa’s workshop except it smells like mushrooms and everyone looks like they want to hurt me.”
Frosty The Snowman (1969)
Frosty (voice of Jack Vernon) first words when coming to life:
“Happy birthday!”
Professor Hinkle (voice of Billy De Wolfe) tells Frosty he wants the hat back “or else”. When Frosty questions him about the “or else” part, Hinkle says”
“Don’t bother me with details! Just give me the hat!”
When Karen (voice of June Foray) explains to the Traffic Cop (voice of Paul Frees) that Frosty has just come to life, the officer says:
“Silly snowmen! Once they come to life they don’t know nothing!”
Frosty is explaining to Karen why he doesn’t like red thermometers says:
“…when the thermometer gets red, the temperature goes up. When the temperature goes up, I start to melt. When I melt, I get all wishy-washy!”
Frosty and Karen are trying to get away from Hinkle. As Frosty skids across the snow with Karen on his back, the Narrator says:
“…Frosty, being made out of snow, was the fastest belly whopper in the world.”
Johnny (Ralph Foody) in the movie that Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) is watching throughout the film shoots Snakes (Michael Guido) and says:
“Keep the change you filthy animal!”
When Harry (Joe Pesci) realizes that Kevin is home alone, he tells Marv (Daniel Stern):
“I think we’re getting scammed by a kindergartener!”
Marv tells Harry:
“He’s only a kid, Harry. We can take him!”
Santa Claus (Ken Hudson Campbell) finds a parking ticket on the windshield of his car and says:
“How can you give Kris Kringle a parking ticket on Christmas Eve? What’s next? Rabies shots for the Easter Bunny?”
Kate (Catherine O’Hara) is complaining to the ticket agent in
“I have been awake for almost sixty hours. I’m tired and I’m dirty. I’ve been from
Trying to thwart Marv and Harry, Kevin yells:
“You guys give up or are you thirsty for more?”
How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)
The Narrator (voice of Boris Karloff) is talking about why the Grinch hates Christmas and says:
“…the best reason of all may have been that his heart was two sizes too small.”
The Narrator says when the Grinch comes up with a plan:
“…then he got an idea, an awful idea. The Grinch had a wonderful, awful idea!”
The Grinch exclaims when he realizes that Christmas Day came anyway:
“It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes or bags!”
When the Grinch questions the true meaning of Christmas the Narrator exclaims:
“…maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more!”
How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
The Grinch (Jim Carrey) checks the outgoing message on his answering machine which says:
“If you utter so much as one syllable, I’ll hunt you down and gut you like a fish. If you’d like to fax me press the star key.”
Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen) tells “Santa” a.k.a. The Grinch:
“…I think he’s kind of sweet.”
The Grinch talks to Max about trying to “frazzle” the Whos:
“…we did our worst and that’s all that matters.”
The Grinch, complaining about the Who’s inviting him to their Christmas celebration, says:
“…if I bump the self loathing to nine, I could still be done in time to lie in bed, stare at the ceiling and slip slowly into madness. But what would I wear?”
When he sees Max knock the fake nose off of his face, The Grinch exclaims:
“You reject your own nose because it represents the glitter of commercialism. Why didn’t I think of that?”
George Bailey (James Stewart) offers to lasso the moon for Mary (Donna Reed) and says:
“…that’s a pretty good idea. I’ll give you the moon Mary!”
Clarence the angel (Henry Travers) says to George:
“You’ve been given a great gift, George, a chance to see what the world would be like without you.”
After seeing what would happen to others, George makes it back to the bridge and says:
“…I want to live again. Please, God, let me live again!”
Annie (Lillian Randolph) walks in with her contribution and says:
“I’ve been saving this money for a divorce if I ever got a husband.”
Near the end of the movie Zuzu Bailey (Karolyn Grimes) exclaims to her dad:
“Teacher says every time a bell rings and angel gets his wings!?
Aging rock star Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) confesses during an interview:
“…if I reach number one I promise to sing the song stark naked on TV on Christmas Eve.”
Sam (Thomas Sangster) is in love with Joanna (Olivia Olson) and has decided to take part in the Christmas concert to win her over. Daniel (Liam Neeson) points out to Sam that he can’t play a musical instrument to which Sam responds:
“A tiny, insignificant detail.”
Colin’s (Kris Marshall) reaction to his trip to
“I’m on
Mark (Andrew Lincoln) tells Juliet (Keira Knightley) how he truly feels via signs which ends:
“…but for now, let me say without hope or agenda, just because it’s Christmas, and at Christmas you tell the truth, to me you are perfect and my wasted heart will love you until you look like this…”
Miracle On
Kris Kringle’s (Edmund Gwenn) reply to Doris Walker (Maureen O’Hara) when she asks him to tell Susan (Natalie Wood) that there is no such person is:
“…I hate to disagree with you but not only is there such a person, but here I am to prove it!”
District Attorney Thomas Mara (Jerome Cowan) questions Kris Kringle and asks where he lives. Kris Kringle’s response is:
“That’s what this hearing will decide.”
Thomas Mara replies to his wife (Ann Staunton), after she wishes she had married a butcher or plumber, by saying:
“…if I lose this hearing you may very well get your wish.”
Fred Gailey (John Payne) says to Doris Walker:
“Faith is believing when common sense tells you not to.”
Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
Sam the Snowman (voice of Burl Ives) says near the beginning of the show:
“…well pull up an ice block and lend an ear!”
The Head Elf (voice of Alfie Scopp) complains when he finds out that Hermey (voice of Paul Soles) wants to be a dentist by saying:
“You’ll never fit it! Now you come to elf practice, learn how to wiggle your ears, chuckle warmly and go he-he and ho-ho and important stuff like that!”
King Moonracer (voice of Stan Francis) tells Rudolph (voice of Billie Mae Richards), Hermey and Yukon Cornelius (voice of Larry Mann) when they’re on the
“A toy is never truly happy until it is loved by a child.”
Yukon Cornelius exclaims after showing up at Santa’s castle with the Bumble:
“Bumbles bounce!”
Santa Claus (also the voice of Stan Francis) says to Rudolph near the end:
“Rudolph with your nose so bright, won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
The Conductor (voice of Tom Hanks) says to the young boy (also the voice of Tom Hanks):
“Well, ya comin’?”
The Hobo’s (Tom Hanks) response when the boy tells him that he’s looking for a girl:
“Well, aren’t we all?”
The Conductor says to the boy:
“Seeing is believing. But sometimes the most real things in the world are things we can’t see.”
Santa Claus (Tom Hanks) says to the boy:
“…the true spirit of Christmas lies in your heart.”
