Countdown to “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”

“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year.  The movie is set for release on May 24th and runs for just under three hours.  What can you expect to see in the film?

**SPOILER ALERT!  As the pirates would say:  “Here be spoilers!  Ye be warned!”  Proceed at your own peril!**

Picking Up Where We Left Off…

At the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest we saw Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) being swallowed by the vicious sea monster, the Kraken.  The rest of the crew, including Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) were last seen mourning the loss of Jack at Tia Dalma’s (Naomie Harris) swampy hideaway when Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) made a sudden reappearance.  We also saw that Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) was now, thanks to Norrington (Jack Davenport), in possession of the heart of Davy Jones (Bill Nighy).  So what does this all mean?

While Jack has been vanquished to Davy Jones’ Locker (which included him being trapped aboard his ship in the middle of a desert), his “friends” and crew travel to Singapore in order to obtain the special map needed to help them navigate the waters to World’s End. They eventually succeed in rescuing him.

What About Davy Jones?

The real threat lies within the fact that Beckett controls Davy Jones and is bent on wiping piracy off the map (or at least the open waters)!  By the beginning of the movie, Davy Jones has already been ordered to kill the Kraken and with Norrington’s assistance has also been tracking and annihilating pirate ships.

Also during the film, we find out that many moviegoers were right in guessing that Davy Jones’ lost love is Calypso (a sea nymph in mythology) who is trapped in the human form of none other than Tia Dalma.  His love and ultimate heartbreak for Calypso is what has transformed Davy Jones into the creature he has become.

One of the main parts that we learn is that, while Davy Jones may be immortal, there is a way to stop him.  That way is by piercing/stabbing his heart.  The catch?  The person who does it will take Davy Jones’ place as the captain of the Flying Dutchman.  This means that the person will only be able to step foot on land once every ten years while spending the rest of the time ferrying the dead to the next world (which was the original mission of the Flying Dutchman).

The Brethren Court

There are nine members of this “pirate council” who convene in an effort to fight Beckett.  These include:

-                            Captain Sao Feng (played by Chow Yun-Fat) who the crew initially obtains the map to World’s End from.  When Feng is killed, who passes his spot in the Brethren Court to Elizabeth.

-                            Barbossa

-                            Jack Sparrow

-                            Captain Ammand (Ghassan Massoud)

-                            Captain Chevalle (Marcel Iures)

-                            Mistress Ching (Takayo Fischer)

-                            Captain Jocard (Hakeem Kae-Kazim)

-                            Sumbhajee (Marshall Menesh)

-                            Captain Villanueva (Sergio Calderon)

At the meeting, it’s Barbossa who suggests that Calypso be released in order to help them fight Beckett.  This will lead to the ultimate showdown between Beckett’s forces and the pirates.

We also meet Captain Teague (Keith Richards) during this time.  Will we find out once and for all if this is Jack’s father?

Those Who Won’t Quite Make It…

As mentioned above, Captain Sao Feng won’t be making it past this film.  A couple of other favorites who presumably won’t be making it for another sequel will be Norrington who gets killed while helping Elizabeth and Governor Swann (Jonathan Pryce) who is supposedly killed by Beckett’s orders.  Davy Jones’ beating heart will also be stopped by one of the three leading characters which means a drastic fate for that person as well.

The Will, Elizabeth and Jack Triangle…

There’s been one question most fans have been pondering since the end of the last film.  Will it be Will and Elizabeth or Elizabeth and Jack?  Will and Elizabeth will rekindle their love and be married but an unforeseen turn of events will mean they won’t exactly live happily ever after.

Will Captain Jack Return?

The movie ends much like the first Pirates movie began; with the possibility of a new, exciting adventure.  While there hasn’t been talk yet about a fourth pirates movie, never say never!
