Countdown to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

The fourth installment of the Harry Potter franchise hits theaters on November 18th.  It’s Harry’s (Daniel Radcliffe) fourth year at Hogwarts and he, Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) are faced with new adventure and danger.  What are some things you can expect to see in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”?

**SPOILER ALERT!  If you haven’t read the book and/or want to wait to see the movie you might want to avoid reading this article!  The following contains information that only an “Obliviate” spell can erase from your memory!**

Hogwarts – It’s Not The Only School Of Magic

Hogwarts isn’t the only school of witchcraft and wizadry.  In “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” we’re introduced to the schools of Beauxbatons, which is run by headmistress Madame Maxime (Frances de la Tour) and Durmstrang, whose headmaster is Karkaroff (Predrag Bjelac).

The Triwizard Tournament

The Triwizard Tournament will be one of the main parts of the film.  The tournament will not only include Harry but will also have Viktor Krum (Stanislav Ianevski) from Durmstrang, Fleur Delacour (Clemence Poesy) from Beauxbatons and Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson) from Hogwart’s Hufflepuff house competing against each other in three separate events.

What Is The Goblet Of Fire?

The goblet of fire is a cup in which eligible students place their names in order to be chosen for the Triwizard Tournament.  The cup is impartial and selects the three most worthy individuals (one from each school) to compete.

Rita Skeeter

Each film has introduced us to a new character.  This one is no different.  One of the quirky characters will be seeing this time is Rita Skeeter (Miranda Richardson) who is a reporter for the “Daily Prophet”.

Mad-Eye Moody

There’s a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.  The crusty Mad-Eye Moody (Brendan Gleeson) takes over for Remus Lupin (David Thewlis who was in “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”).  Harry will learn that there’s more than meets the eye about this professor who teaches “constant vigilance”.

Love Is In The Air

While J.K. Rowling has given us a glimpse into the possible romance of Ron and Hermione, this is the first time we’ll see Harry fall head over heels for someone.  We’ll be introduced to fellow Hogwarts student Cho Chang (Katie Leung).

The Return Of Voldemort

Where did Peter Pettigrew a.k.a. Wormtail (Timothy Spall) go when he scampered away at the end of the third movie?  He went to Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) who has an evil plan to use Harry to regenerate and return to full power.

What We Won’t Be Seeing

While the book for “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” is several hundred pages long, the movie runs a little over two and a half hours.  What does that mean?  Some of the things from the book won’t be making it to the big screen.  With the movie supposedly starting at the Quidditch World Cup, we won’t be seeing the Dursleys.  Also Hermione’s house elf equality movement, S.P.E.W., won’t be as significant as it was in the book.
