Bravo TV recently aired a countdown of the top one hundred funniest movies.  Which comedies did they pick for numbers 51 through 100?

 

100. Anchorman (2004)

Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) is the anchor of San Diego’s top news team in the 1970s.  When Veronica (Christina Applegate) joins the newscast, will the rest of the team accept her?  Anchorman” also stars Steve Carell, David Koechner and Paul Rudd.

 

99.  The Birdcage (1996)

Armand (Robin Williams) and Albert (Nathan Lane) live together and operate a nightclub.  When Armand’s son, Val (Dan Futterman), becomes engaged to Barbara (Calista Flockhart), who happens to be the daughter of Senator Keeley (Gene Hackman) and his wife (played by Diane Wiest), Armand and Albert, along with Agador (Hank Azaria), are determined to put on the best front possible.

 

98.  School of Rock (2003)

Dewey Finn (Jack Black) is a down on his luck musician.  But what happens when he poses as a teacher at a private school?

 

97.  Happy Gilmore (1996)

Adam Sandler played the title role in this 1996 comedy.  When Happy’s grandmother’s (Frances Bay) house is in danger of being sold, Happy decides to play professional golf in order to save it.  Watch for an appearance by TV host Bob Barker!

 

96.  Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)

Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell star in this movie.  Charles (Grant) and Carrie (MacDowell) meet and fall in love over the course of attending four weddings and a funeral.

 

95.  Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle (2004)

College students Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) have one mission when they begin their road trip: to get White Castle hamburgers.  Their journey takes longer than expected when they run into unusual obstacles.  Look for Neil Patrick Harris in this one!

 

94.  Waiting For Guffman (1996)

A small town in Missouri tries to put on a talent show using their local citizens.  “Waiting for Guffman” starred Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara and Parker Posey.

 

93.  The Aristocrats (2005)

This documentary featured over one hundred famed comedians including Jason Alexander, Whoopi Goldberg, Howie Mandel and Robin Williams.  Each entertainer tells their own unique version of the same classic joke.

 

92.  Father of the Bride (1991)

Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Kimberly Williams Paisley starred in this comedic remake.  It’s not all fun and games when George’s (Martin) daughter Annie (Paisley) decides to get married.

 

91.  Revenge of the Nerds (1984)

The nerds of Adams College are tired of being outcasts and form their own fraternity.  “Revenge of the Nerds” starred Curtis Armstrong, Robert Carradine and Anthony Edwards.

 

90.  Clueless (1995)

Cher (Alicia Silverstone) not only has to worry about fashion and her two friends, Dionne (Stacey Dash) and Tai (Brittany Murphy) in “Clueless”.  There’s also Josh (Paul Rudd) to deal with!

 

89.  Slapshot (1977)

A hockey team decides to add something extra to the sport.  They decide to fight during games.  “Slapshot” starred Paul Newman.

 

88.  Team America (2004)

The creators of “South Park”, Trey Parker and Matt Stone were also behind “Team America : World Police”.  The marionette heroes of the film poked fun at world leaders as well as celebrities.

 

87.  The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977)

This comedy, one of the earlier films by John Landis, was a combination of several spoofs and skits.

 

86.  Zoolander (2001)

It’s war between top models Derek (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson).  But will the two put aside their differences in order to stop Mugatu (Will Ferrell)?

 

85.  Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1983)

Although they’re complete opposites, Freddy (Steve Martin) and Lawrence (Michael Caine) have one thing in common.  They’re both con-men.  But their work is cut out for them when they meet Janet (Gleene Headley) who’s not quite what she appears to be.

 

84.  Silver Streak (1976)

George (Gene Wilder) finds himself in trouble onboard a train from Los Angeles to Chicago and the only person who can help him is Grover (Richard Pryor).

 

83.  Sister Act (1992)

When Deloris (Whoopi Goldberg), a lounge singer, witnesses a murder, the police relocate her to the safety of a convent.  Here she comes under the ire of Mother Superior (Maggie Smith) who orders Deloris to work with the convent’s choir.

 

82.  Tootsie (1982)

Dustin Hoffman played dual roles in this comedy.  Michael (Hoffman) is down on his luck when he opts to portray himself as Dorothy to get an acting gig.  Dorothy then becomes famous on a soap opera.  How will Michael be able to cope and will he be able to win the woman he loves?

 

81.  Half Baked (1998)

Kenny (Harland Williams) is in a lot of trouble and it’s up to his friends to help bail him out.  “Half Baked” also starred Jim Breuer and Dave Chappelle.

 

80.  Lost In America (1985)

Albert Brooks and Julie Hagerty starred in “Lost In America”.  A couple decides to give up everything in order to see America, with hilarious results.

 

79.  Three Amigos  (1986)

Three out of work actors (played by Chevy Chase, Steve Martin and Martin Short) travel to Mexico for what they believe to be an acting job.  However, the acting job becomes reality when they are the only hope to free a small town.

 

78.  Bananas (1971)

Woody Allen directed and starred in this comedy.  Fielding Mellish (Allen) will do anything to win the love of Nancy (Louise Lasser), even become the ruler of his own country.

 

77.  Flirting With Disaster (1996)

A man must travel across country in order to make contact with his parents.  “Flirting with Disaster” starred Patricia Arquette, Tea Leoni and Ben Stiller.

 

76.  Ghostbusters (1984)

Are you afraid of ghosts?  Three parapsychologists (Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis) use their expertise to trap ghosts that are wreaking havoc in New York.

 

75.  Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Two not-so-ingenious roommates travel across the country to Aspen, Colorado to return a briefcase filled with money left by a woman (Lauren Holly) at an airport.  “Dumb and Dumber” starred Jim Carrey as Lloyd and Jeff Daniels as Harry.

 

74.  Trading Places (1983)

What happens when a snobby financier and a con-artist switch lifestyles?  Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis and Eddie Murphy starred in “Trading Places”.

 

73.  City Slickers (1991)

When Mitch (Billy Crystal) goes through a midlife crisis, he and his two best friends, Phil (Daniel Stern) and Ed (Bruno Kirby) decide to go on a cattle roundup.  Not only does the trio have to adjust to a different way of life but they also have to take their chances with Curly (Jack Palance).

 

72.  Moonstruck (1987)

Loretta (Cher), a widow, has trouble when she falls for Ronny (Nicolas Cage), the brother of her fiancé (Vincent Gardenia).

 

71.  Roxanne (1987)

On this take of the Cyrano de Bergerac story, Steve Martin plays C.D. Bales, a fireman who falls for Roxanne (Daryl Hannah).  However, Chris (Rick Rossovich) is also smitten with her.

 

70.  Nutty Professor (1996)

This remake starred Eddie Murphy as Sherman Klump, a professor that invents a serum that turns him into his alter ego, Buddy Love.  Will this help Sherman capture the love of Carla Purty (Jada Pinkett Smith)?

 

69.  Blues Brothers (1980)

Jake Blues (John Belushi) has just gotten out of prison and is looking to put his old band back together with the help of his brother Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) in order to help out a struggling Catholic school.

 

68.  Broadcast News (1987)

It’s substance versus flash in this comedy film.  Tom Grunick (William Hurt), Aaron Altman (Albert Brooks) and Jane (Holly Hunter) are involved in a love triangle at work.

 

67.  Kingpin (1996)

Roy’s (Woody Harrelson) career may be over but he’s convinced that Ishmael (Randy Quaid) not only has what it takes to be the next bowling superstar but can also be the one to defeat the legendary Ernie (Bill Murray).

 

66.  Dazed and Confused (1996)

It’s the last day of school at Robert E. Lee High School in Texas!  “Dazed and Confused” starred Matthew McConaughey and Milla Jovovich.

 

65.  Office Space (1999)

It’s the movie with flare!  Three co-workers (Ron Livingston, David Herman and Ajay Naidu) have had enough and concoct a plan to use a computer virus to cycle money from the company’s accounts.  “Office Space” also starred Jennifer Aniston and Stephen Root.

 

64.  This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

It’s a rock band’s nightmare come true in this Rob Reiner film.  Reiner plays Marty, a fan of the legendary Spinal Tap (Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer), who films a documentary of the band while they’re on an American comeback tour.

 

63.  Manhattan (1979)

Love is complicated in Woody Allen’s 1979 film “Manhattan”.  Isaac (Allen) not only has an ex-wife and a young girlfriend, Tracy (Mariel Hemingway), that he can’t stand, but he’s also falling in love with his best friend’s girlfriend, Mary (Diane Keaton).

 

62.  Pink Panther (1963)

Although this film has been remade in recent months, it’s the 1963 version of the “Pink Panther” that ranks at number 62.  In this version, Inspector Jacques Clousea (Peter Sellers) must find a jewel thief.  The movie also starred David Niven and Robert Wagner.

 

61.  Election (1999)

A high school overachiever, Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon), decides to run for class president.  Her teacher, Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) is determined to stop her from winning.

 

60.  When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Can love complicate a long friendship?  Rob Reiner directed this hit movie that starred Billy Crystal as Harry and Meg Ryan as Sally.

 

59.  Police Academy Series (1984 - ?)

Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall, Michael Winslow and Bubba Smith all starred in the first “Police Academy” movie in 1984.  The comedy told the story of cadets, going through training, to get on the police force.  They soon realize it’s not all fun and games.  Bob Goldthwait joined the cast as Zed in later movies which were released from 1985 through 1994.  Another “Police Academy” movie is currently in the works.

 

58.  Private Benjamin (1980)

Judy Benjamin (Goldie Hawn) joins the army on a whim and soon realizes that this lifestyle is more than she bargained for.  “Private Benjamin” also starred Eileen Brennan as Captain Lewis.

 

57.  Swingers (1996)

Mike (Jon Favreau) has been dumped by his longtime girlfriend and can’t come to grips with it.  His two friends (played by Vince Vaughn and Ron Livingston) are determined to help him through the crisis!

 

56.  Young Frankenstein (1974)

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) has inherited his grandfather’s castle, including his laboratory.  He soon finds himself taking up where his grandfather’s experiments left off.

 

55.  Bull Durham (1988)

It’s baseball season and Annie (Susan Sarandon) usually starts a relationship with one of the local team’s players.  This year she has her hands full with Nuke (Tim Robbins) and his mentor Crash (Kevin Costner).

 

54.  Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

He’s taking a day off from school at all costs!  This comedy starred Matthew Broderick in the title role.

 

53.  Dr. Strangelove (1964)

General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) has become unhinged.  After he decides to bomb Russia which could ultimately result in the destruction of the world, it’s up to others to try to stop him.  Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove: or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” starred Peter Sellers (in three different roles), James Earl Jones, Slim Pickens and George C. Scott.

 

52.  Meet the Parents (2000)

Greg (Ben Stiller) has the unenviable task of meeting his girlfriend’s (Teri Polo) parents.  Will he be able to survive a weekend with Jack (Robert DeNiro), a former CIA operative and Dina (Blythe Danner)?

 

51.  Vacation (1983)

Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) has a mission.  He wants to take a family vacation to Wally World.  As soon as the trip begins, Clark realizes that a vacation may turn out to be more work than he anticipated.
