Toronto Film Festival (2007)

 

This year marked the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival.  Held from September 6th through 15th, the festival featured a who’s who of cinema as well as some of the most anticipated movies that are set to be released in the near future.  What were some of this year’s highlights?

 

The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford

Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck star in “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”.  In the film, Ford (Affleck) joins the gang headed by Jesse James (Pitt) but soon concocts a plan to get rid of the infamous outlaw.

 

Atonement

What will the repercussions be when 13-year-old Briony (Saoirse Ronan) falsely accuses her sister’s friend of a crime?  Keira Knightley and James McAvoy also star in “Atonement”.

 

Cassandra’s Dream

“Cassandra’s Dream” was written and directed by Woody Allen and stars Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor.  The movie tells the story of two brothers who turn to crime at the coercion of a young woman they happen to meet which results in a bitter rivalry.

 

Closing The Ring

During World War II, a pilot dies after his plane crashes in Belfast, Ireland, leaving behind a ring that he requests to be sent to his girlfriend.  Now, in present day, a young man tries to track down the rightful owner of the ring.  “Closing the Ring” stars Neve Campbell, Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer and Mischa Barton and was directed by Richard Attenborough.

 

Death Defying Acts

What will happen when Harry Houdini begins a relationship with a Scottish psychic who has ulterior motives?  “Death Defying Acts” stars Guy Pearce and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

 

Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Cate Blanchett reprises her role as England’s Queen Elizabeth I in “Elizabeth: The Golden Age”.  Also starring Clive Owen and Geoffrey Rush, the movie continues with Elizabeth’s reign and her dealings with Sir Walter Raleigh (Owen) and the Spanish Armada.

 

The Girl In The Park

Julia Sandburg cut herself off from everyone when her young daughter disappeared.  Now fifteen years later, the old wounds are opened again when Julia meets Louise, who happens to be the same age as her long lost daughter.  Are they one and the same?  “The Girl in the Park” stars Kate Bosworth and Sigourney Weaver.

 

I’m Not There

Several incarnations of legendary musician Bob Dylan’s personality come to life in “I’m Not There”.  The movie stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Richard Gere and Heath Ledger.

 

In The Valley Of Elah

With the help of Detective Emily Sanders, the parents of soldier investigate the disappearance of their son after returning home from Ira.  “In The Valley of Elah” stars Tommy Lee Jones, Susan Sarandon and Charlize Theron.

 

Into The Wild

Emile Hirsch stars as Christopher McCandless in “Into the Wild”.  After graduating college, Christopher goes on a self discovering journey to Alaska and meets some interesting characters along the way.  The movie also stars William Hurt, Catherine Keener and Vince Vaughn.

 

Juno

When Juno (Ellen Page) discovers that she’s pregnant by her friend Paulie (Michael Cera), she selects a married couple, Vanessa (Jennifer Garner) and Mark (Jason Bateman), as the baby’s adoptive parents.  “Juno” also stars Allison Janney and J.K. Simmons.

 

King Of California

Michael Douglas and Evan Rachel Wood star in “King of California”.  Is there gold buried nearby?  Charlie (Douglas), who’s just been released from a mental facility, sure hopes so and tries to convince his daughter, Miranda (Wood), to join in the search for it.

 

Lars And The Real Girl

The shy, introverted Lars is the talk of the town when he introduces his new girlfriend, who happens to be a life sized doll.  “Lars and the Real Girl” stars Ryan Gosling.

 

Margot At The Wedding

Margot and Pauline are two sisters who don’t exactly see eye to eye.  But things soon come to a head when Pauline decides to get married to the unscrupulous Malcolm.  “Margot at the Wedding” stars Jack Black, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Nicole Kidman.

 

Married Life

Harry is married to Pat but is having an affair with Kay.  But how will things unfold when Harry plots to kill Pat in order to save her from the embarrassment that would be caused if he left her?  “Married Life” stars Pierce Brosnan, Patricia Clarkson, Chris Cooper and Rachel McAdams.

 

No Country For Old Men

The Coen Brothers are back with “No Country for Old Men” starring Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones.  Things go from bad to worse for Llewelyn Moss when he happens across the scene of a drug deal that went wrong.

 

Smiley Face

It’s not a typical day for Jane when she eats her roommate’s brownies that have an added ingredient!  Anna Faris stars in “Smiley Face”.
