2007 Oscar Nominated Actors and Actresses

 

Each year the Oscars honor some of the best performances in movies.  While some nominees are familiar favorites, others are newcomers to the Academy Awards.  We take a look at each of the nominees and some of the other films and projects they’ve appeared in.

 

Alan Arkin

Three time Oscar nominee Alan Arkin is in the running for best supporting actor for his work in “Little Miss Sunshine”.  Arkin has also appeared in such films as “Edward Scissorhands”, “Grosse Pointe Blank”, “Firewall” and “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause”.

 

Adriana Barraza

First time Oscar contender Adriana Barraza is nominated for her work in “Babel”.  The actress, who is up for the best supporting actress award, has appeared in a number of movies and TV shows in her native Mexico.  She next appears in the movie “Don’t Let Me Drown”.

 

Cate Blanchett

A previous winner in the best supporting actress category is Cate Blanchett who is once again nominated for her work in “Notes on a Scandal”.  Blanchett, who won for her work in “The Aviator”, has also starred in “Elizabeth”, the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the critically acclaimed “Babel”.

 

Abigail Breslin

Abigail Breslin, the young star of “Little Miss Sunshine” is a contender in the best supporting actress category.  She has appeared in such films as “Signs”, “The Princess Diaries 2” and “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause”.

 

Penelope Cruz

Although Penelope Cruz has starred in a number of films, her role in “Volver” garnered the actress her first Oscar nomination in the best actress category.  Cruz has also appeared in “Blow”, “Vanilla Sky” and “Sahara”.

 

Judi Dench

Judi Dench is a previous nominee for best actress and won the Oscar for best supporting actress in “Shakespeare in Love”.  Dench, who’se currently nominated for her work in “Notes on a Scandal” has starred in “Mrs. Henderson Presents”, “Iris”, “Chocolat” , “Mrs. Brown” and Casino Royale.

 

Leonardo DiCaprio

A familiar face to the Oscars is Leonardo DiCaprio who is nominated for best actor for his work in the drama “Blood Diamond”.  DiCaprio received critical acclaim for his role as Jack Dawson in the best picture winner Titanic and in the nominated “The Departed”.  He also starred in the period dramas Man in the Iron Mask and Gangs of New York.  But DiCaprio’s previous Oscar nominations were for “The Aviator” and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.

 

Ryan Gosling

First time best actor nominee Ryan Gosling is being recognized for his work in “Half Nelson”.  Gosling received plenty of accolades for his role in The Notebook.  He has also starred in “Remember the Titans”, “Murder by Numbers” and “Stay”.

 

Jackie Earle Haley

Oscar newcomer Jackie Earle Haley is nominated for best supporting actor for his work in “Little Children”.  Haley has appeared in “All the King’s Men” and in the 1976 version of “Bad News Bears” as well as a number of TV guest spots.

 

Djimon Hounsou

Djimon Hounsou is nominated for best supporting actor for his work in “Blood Diamond”.  Hounsou, who was previously nominated for “In America”, has also starred in “Amistad”, “Constantine” and “The Island”.

 

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson’s first foray into film garnered her a best supporting actress nomination for her work in “Dreamgirls”.  The singer/actress also made a notable appearance as one of the top ten finalists in the talent competition “American Idol”.

 

Rinko Kikuchi

Rinko Kikuchi is nominated for best supporting actress for her work in “Babel”.  Kikuchi, who has appeared in a number of movies in her native Japan, is set to next appear in the film “The Brothers Bloom”.

 

Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren is currently nominated for best actress for her work in “The Queen”.  Mirren has two previous Oscar nominations under her belt for her work in Gosford Park and “The Madness of King George”.  She has also starred in the movies “Calendar Girls” and “Excalibur”.

 

Eddie Murphy

Although Eddie Murphy is considered a super star in Hollywood, his role in “Dreamgirls” garnered him his first Oscar nomination.  The best supporting actor nominee has starred in numerous films including “48 Hours”, “Harlem Nights”, Daddy Day Care and the recent comedy “Norbit”.

 

Peter O’Toole

Peter O’Toole, a veteran of the Oscars, is currently nominated for best actor for his work in the film “Venus”.  The recipient of the Oscars’ Honorary Award, O’Toole has been nominated seven previous times without taking home the gold statuette.  His films include “Lawrence of Arabia” and the current “One Night with the King”.

 

Will Smith

Another previous nominee is Will Smith who is up for best actor for his work in The Pursuit of Happyness.  Smith was nominated in this category for his title role in the movie “Ali”.  His other projects include “Independence Day”, “Men in Black” and “Bad Boys”.

 

Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep’s best actress nod for “The Devil Wears Prada” brings her total Oscar nominations to fourteen.  Streep has won twice for her work in “Kramer vs. Kramer” and in “Sophie’s Choice”.

 

Mark Wahlberg

“The Departed” garnered Mark Wahlberg his first Oscar nomination in the best supporting actor category.  Wahlberg, who recently starred in the film “Invincible”, has also appeared in “The Perfect Storm”, “Boogie Nights” and “The Italian Job”.

 

Forest Whitaker

Best actor nominee Forest Whitaker is a newcomer to the Oscar category.  Whitaker, who is nominated for his performance in “The Last King of Scotland” has made notable appearances in such movies as “Panic Room” and “Phone Booth” as well as “Good Morning Vietnam”, “Jason’s Lyrics”, “Species” and “Phenomenon”.

 

Kate Winslet

Another familiar face to the best actress category is Kate Winslet.  Winslet, who is nominated for her role in “Little Children”, has four previous nods for her work in “Sense and Sensibility”, Titanic, “Iris” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”.
