The National Board of Review’s annual gala took place in
Best Film
The Coen Brother’s “No Country for Old Men” starring Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones won for the year’s best film.
Best Actor
George Clooney received best actor honors for his portrayal of the title character in “Michael Clayton.”
Best Actress
Julie Christie won for best actress for her portrayal of Fiona Anderson in “Away From Her”.
Best Supporting Actor
Casey Affleck who portrayed Robert Ford in “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” won for best supporting actor.
Best Supporting Actress
Best supporting actress honors were given to Amy Ryan who played the character of Helene McCready in “Gone Baby Gone”.
Breakthrough Performance (Female)
Ellen Page received breakthrough performance honors for her portrayal of the title character in “Juno”.
Breakthrough Performance (Male)
“Into the Wild” star Emile Hirsch won also won for his breakthrough performance as Christopher McCandless in the film.
Best Acting Ensemble
The cast of the critically acclaimed “No Country for Old Men” won the acting ensemble award.
Career Achievement Award
Legendary actor Michael Douglas received this year’s career achievement award. Douglas, who won a best actor Oscar for “Wall Street”, has also played memorable characters in “Romancing the Stone”, “Fatal Attraction”, “Basic Instinct” and “Traffic”.
Best Director
Tim Burton received best director honors for his behind the camera work on “Sweeney Todd”.
Best Directorial Debut
Ben Affleck won for his directorial work on “Gone Baby Gone”.
Best Original Screenplay
Two screenplays were recognized for this award. “Juno” was written by Diablo Cody and “Lars and the Real Girl” which was written by Nancy Oliver.
Best Adapted Screenplay
“No Country for Old Men” which was adapted for the screen by Ethan and Joel Coen won the award.
Best Animated Feature
The best animated feature was “Ratatouille”.
Best Documentary
“Body of War” was selected as the year’s best documentary.
Best Foreign Film
The biographical “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” starring Mathieu Amalric as Jean-Dominique Bauby was named best foreign film.
The National Board of Review’s “Freedom of Expression” Award
Two movies were selected for this year’s “Freedom of Expression” award. “The Great Debaters” stars Denzel Washington (who also directed the film) and Forest Whitaker and the animated “
