2007 Independent Spirit Awards

 

The world of Independent Film was honored at the 2007 Independent Spirit Awards.  The awards were held on February 24th and were hosted by actress/comedienne Sarah Silverman.  Who were this year’s award winners?

 

Best Feature

“American Gun”

“The Dead Girl”

“Half Nelson”

Little Miss Sunshine

“Pan’s Labyrinth”

 

And the winner is:  Little Miss Sunshine which tells of a family’s journey via a bright yellow Volkswagen bus to enter their daughter in a beauty pageant.

 

Best First Feature

“Day Night Day Night”

“Man Push Cart”

“The Motel”

Sweet Land

“Wristcutters: A Love Story”

 

And the winner is:  Sweet Land” which tells the story of a woman who travels from Norway to Minnesota as a mail order bride.

 

Best Director

Robert Altman for “A Prairie Home Companion”

Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris for Little Miss Sunshine

Ryan Fleck for “Half Nelson”

Karen Moncrieff for “The Dead Girl”

Steven Soderbergh for “Bubble”

 

And the winner is:  Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris for their work on Little Miss Sunshine.

 

Best Documentary

“A Lion in the House”

“My Country, My Country”

“The Road to Guantanamo

“The Trials of Darryl Hunt”

“You’re Gonna Miss Me”

 

And the winner is:  “The Road to Guantanamo” which tells the story of three British Muslim men who were incarcerated for two years before being released.

 

Best Foreign Film

12:08 East of Bucharest” from Romania

“The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros” from the Philippines

“Chronicle of an Escape” from Argentina

“Days of Glory” from Singapore

“The Lives of Others” from Germany

 

And the winner is:  “Leben der Anderen, Das” a.k.a. “The Lives of Others” which tells the story of a well known couple being observed by the secret police.

 

Best Screenplay

“Friends with Money” by Nicole Holofcener

“The Illusionist” by Neil Burger

“The Painted Veil” by Ron Nyswaner

“Sorry, Haters” by Jeff Stanzler

“Thank You for Smoking” by Jason Reitman

 

And the winner is:  The screenplay for “Thank You for Smoking” written by Jason Reitman

 

Best First Screenplay

“Conversations With Other Women” by Gabrielle Zevin

“A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” by Dito Montiel

“Half Nelson” by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck

Little Miss Sunshine by Michael Arndt

“Wristcutters” A Love Story” by Goran Dukic

 

And the winner is:  Little Miss Sunshine written by Michael Arndt

 

Best Female Lead

Shareeka Epps as Drey in “Half Nelson”

Catherine O’Hara as Marilyn Hack in “For Your Consideration”

Elizabeth Reaser as Inge in “Sweet Land

Michelle Williams as Lana in “Land of Plenty

Robin Wright Penn as Phoebe in “Sorry, Haters”

 

And the winner is:  Shareeka Epps won for her role as the young student, Drey, in “Half Nelson”.

 

Best Supporting Female

Melonie Diaz as Laurie in “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints”

Marcia Gay Harden as Janet Huttenson in “American Gun”

Mary Beth Hurt as Ruth in “The Dead Girl”

Frances McDormand as Jane in “Friends with Money”

Amber Tamblyn in the title role in “Stephanie Daley”

 

And the winner is:  Frances McDormand for her role as Jane in the film “Friends with Money”.

 

Best Male Lead

Aaron Eckhart as Nick Naylor in “Thank You for Smoking”

Ryan Gosling as Dan Dunne in “Half Nelson”

Edward Norton as Walter Fane in "The Painted Veil"

Ahmad Razvi as Ahmad in “Man Push Cart”

Forest Whitaker as Carter in “American Gun”

 

And the winner is:  Ryan Gosling as the troubled teacher, Dan Dunne, in “Half Nelson”.

 

Best Supporting Male

Alan Arkin as Grandpa Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine

Raymond Barry as Vic Lee in “Steel City

Daniel Craig as Perry Smith in “Infamous”

Paul Dano as Dwayne in “Little Miss Sunshine”

Channing Tatum as Antonio in “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints”

 

And the winner is:  Alan Arkin for his role as the fiery Grandpa in Little Miss Sunshine.
