October 22nd marked the 11th annual Hollywood Film Awards festivities. Hosted by Mary Hart from TV’s “Entertainment Tonight”, the awards were once again held at
Best Supporting Actor Of The Year
John Travolta received the award for best support actor for his work in “Hairspray”. Travolta portrayed Edna Turnblad, the mother of Tracy (Nikki Blonsky), a teenager who gets the chance of a lifetime to dance on the Corny Collins Show.

Breakthrough Actor Of The Year
Casey Affleck won this year’s “Breakthrough Actor” award. Affleck has starred in a number of movies including the recent “Ocean’s 13”, “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” and “Gone Baby Gone”. He has also made notable appearances Ocean’s 11 and its 2004 sequel “Ocean’s 12” as well as “Hamlet” (2000) and the “American Pie” movies.
Breakthrough Actress Of The Year
Ellen Page won the award for “Breakthrough Actress”. Page received critical acclaim for her title role in “Juno”. She has also starred as Kitty Pride in X-Men: The Last Stand and in the recent “The Stone Angel”.
Richard Gere received “Actor of the Year” honors at this year’s event. Gere recently received accolades for his performance in “The Hoax” where he played Clifford Irving, a writer who authors a fake biography on Howard Hughes. He also stars in the films “The Hunting Party” and “I’m Not There”.
This year’s “Actress of the Year” honors went to Marion Cotillard. Cotillard currently stars as the 1940s singer Edith Piaf in the film “La Vie en Rose” a.k.a. “La Mome” .
Quite a few animated movies hit theaters this year but it was Disney/Pixar’s “Ratatouille” that won the top prize. “Ratatouille” features the voice of Patton Oswald as Remy, a young rat that has a flare for French cuisine!
Hollywood Breakthrough Director Of The Year
Although we’re used to seeing him on the silver screen, Ben Affleck was honored for his directorial debut. He was behind the camera for “Gone Baby Gone”, which Affleck also co-wrote, and starred brother Casey Affleck, Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris.
Hollywood Director Of The Year
“Director of the Year” honors went to Marc Forster. Forster has been behind the camera for such films as “Monster’s Ball”, “Finding Neverland” and “Stranger Than Fiction”. He recently directed “The Kite Runner” and will be at the helm of the next installment of James Bond.
The cast of the musical “Hairspray” received the ensemble acting award. The movie stars Nikki Blonsky, John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken and Queen Latifah.
Online voting determined the outcome of this award. The honors went to “300” which starred Gerard Butler and Lena Headey.
They were more than meets the eye at this year’s summer box office. Transformers, starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and Josh Duhamel, won the award.
