2007 BAFTA Awards

  

The 2007 Orange British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) were held on February 11th at the Royal Opera House in London.  The awards, which are often seen as a precursor to the Academy Awards, honored some of the year’s best in film.  Who are some of this year’s winners?

 

Best Film

Babel

“The Departed”

“The Last King of Scotland

“Little Miss Sunshine”

“The Queen”

 

And the winner is:  “The Queen” starring Helen Mirren and James Cromwell.  The movie tells the story of the Royal Family in the days following Princess Diana’s death.

 

Best British Film (The Alexander Korda Award)

Casino Royale

“The Last King of Scotland

“Notes On a Scandal”

“The Queen”

“United 93”

 

And the winner is:  “The Last King of Scotland” starring Forest Whitaker in a story about the brutal Ugandan leader Idi Amin.

 

Best Animated Film

“Cars”

“Flushed Away”

“Happy Feet”

 

And the winner is:  “Happy Feet” featuring the voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brittany Murphy, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman.

 

Best Foreign Language Film

“Apocalypto”

“Black Book”
”Paint It Yellow”

”Pan’s Labyrinth”

“Volver”

 

And the winner is:  “Pan’s Labyrinth”, the fantasy tale by Guillermo del Toro.


Best Director (The David Lean Award)

Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris for “Little Miss Sunshine”

Stephen Frears for “The Queen”

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for “Babel

Paul Greengrass for “United 93”

Martin Scorsese for “The Departed”

 

And the winner is:  Paul Greengrass for his film “United 93” which tells the story of the ill-fated flight that crashed in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001 when passengers and crew fought against the terrorists who high jacked the plane.

 

Best Adapted Screenplay

Casino Royale

“The Departed”

“The Devil Wears Prada”

“The Last King of Scotland

“Notes On a Scandal”

 

And the winner is:  “The Last King of Scotland” by Jeremy Brock and Peter Morgan.

 

Best Original Screenplay

Babel

“Little Miss Sunshine”

“Pan’s Labyrinth”

“The Queen”

“United 93”

 

And the winner is:  “Little Miss Sunshine” by Michael Arndt.

 

Best Actor

Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale

Leonardo DiCaprio as Billy Costigan in “The Departed”

Richard Griffiths as Hector in “The History Boys”

Peter O’Toole as Maurice in “Venus”

Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland

 

And the winner is:  Forest Whitaker for his portrayal of the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland”.

 

Best Actress

Penelope Cruz as Raimunda in “Volver”

Judi Dench as Barbara Covett in “Notes on a Scandal”

Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen”

Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada”

Kate Winslet as Sarah Pierce in “Little Children”

 

And the winner is:  Helen Mirren for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen”.

 

Best Supporting Actor

Alan Arkin as Grandpa in “Little Miss Sunshine”

James McAvoy as Nicholas Garrigan in “The Last King of Scotland

Jack Nicholson as Frank Costello in “The Departed”

Leslie Phillips as Ian in “Venus”

Michael Sheen as Prime Minister Tony Blair in “The Queen”

 

And the winner is:  Alan Arkin for his portrayal of Grandpa Hoover in the film “Little Miss Sunshine”.

 

Best Supporting Actress

Emily Blunt as Emily in “The Devil Wears Prada”

Abigail Breslin as Olive in “Little Miss Sunshine”

Toni Colette as Sheryl in “Little Miss Sunshine”

Frances De La Tour as Mrs. Lintott in “The History Boys”

Jennifer Hudson as Effie White in “Dreamgirls”

 

And the winner is:  Jennifer Hudson for her portrayal of Effie White in the musical/drama “Dreamgirls”.

 

The Orange Rising Star Award

Emily Blunt who recently starred as Emily in “The Devil Wears Prada”

Eva Green whose film credits include Casino Royale and “Kingdom of Heaven” (2005)

Naomie Harris who recently starred in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Cillian Murphy who starred “Breakfast on Pluto” (2005), “Red Eye” (2005) and Batman Begins

Ben Whishaw who recently starred in “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”

 

And the winner is:  Eva Green who starred in Casino Royale as Vesper Lynd and in “Kingdom of Heaven” as Sibylla.

 

Best Film Music (The Anthony Asquith Award)

Babel

Casino Royale

“Dreamgirls”

“Happy Feet”

“The Queen”

 

And the winner is:  The music from “Babel” by Gustavo Santaolalla.
