Toronto Film Festival (2006)

 

The Toronto Film Festival has become renowned for being a star studded, movie premier extravaganza.  What were some of the movie highlights of this year’s festival that was held from September 7th through 16th?

 

All The King’s Men

This star studded movie tells the story of Willie Stark (Sean Penn) who is running for Governor in Louisiana.  “All the King’s Men” stars Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law and Kate Winslet and is set for release in September.

 

Amazing Grace

William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) must fight Parliament, at the risk of personal safety, in his mission to stop slavery.  Set in England in the 1700s, “Amazing Grace” also stars Albert Finney and Michael Gambon.  The film is scheduled for a February 2007 release.

 

Babel

Communication is key to this movie that tells three stories set in four locations.  One story tells of a married couple (Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt) in crisis when the wife is shot while traveling through a foreign land.  Look for this drama in limited release in October.

 

Breaking and Entering

A man’s marriage begins to unravel when he becomes enthralled with the mother of a boy who breaks into people’s homes.  “Breaking and Entering” stars Juliette Binoche, Jude Law and Robin Wright Penn.  The movie is set for limited release in December.

 

Citizen Duane

Douglas Smith stars as a teenager who decides to run for mayor in his hometown of Ridgeway.  “Citizen Duane” co-stars Vivica A. Fox and Donal Logue.

 

For Your Consideration

Christopher Guest directs and co-stars in this “film within a film” comedy.  What will the cast of a movie do when they discover some of their stars are being considered for prestigious awards for the film before it’s finished?  Ed Begley Jr., Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara star in “For Your Consideration”, set for release in November.

 

A Good Year

Russell Crowe stars as a man who inherits a vineyard.  But what happens when a woman also lays claim to the land?  Albert Finney and Freddie Highmore also star in this comedy that’s set to hit theaters in November.

 

The Hottest State

Ethan Hawke not only co-stars in “The Hottest State”, but also directed and wrote the film.  The movie, which tells the story of an actor trying to make his way in New York, co-stars Catalina Sandino Moreno and Mark Webber.

 

The Last King of Scotland

Rumors already have Forest Whitaker receiving an Oscar nomination for his role as Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland”.  The film tells the story of the Ugandan leader via his physician Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy).  The movie also stars Gillian Anderson and is set for limited release in September.

 

Little Children

How will lives in a small town change when a woman has an affair with a married man?  “Little Children” stars Kate Winslet and Jennifer Connelly.  The movie is scheduled to hit theaters in October.

 

The Magic Flute

“The Magic Flute” tells the story of a prince who battles evil with the help of his sidekick.  The movie was directed by Kenneth Branagh who also co-stars in the film.

 

The Pleasure of Your Company

Jason Biggs and Isla Fisher star in this romantic comedy.  A man (Biggs), who’s never had much success with love, decides to ask a waitress (Fisher) to marry him on a whim.

 

Stranger Than Fiction

A man finds his life being narrated by a voice that only he can hear.  This comedy’s all star cast includes Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifah.  Look for “Stranger than Fiction” to hit theaters in November.

 

The U.S. vs. John Lennon

Yoko Ono attended the Toronto screening of this documentary.  The film showcases the life of John Lennon from the mid 1960s through the 1970s at the height of his anti-war political stances.  “The U.S. vs. John Lennon” is set for limited release in September.

 

Volver

Penelope Cruz has generated a lot of buzz for her work in the film “Volver”.  In the film, a woman’s ghost returns to mend the rifts she had with her daughters.  The film is set for limited release in November.
