National Film Registry’s 2006 Selections

 

Each year twenty-five movies are selected as part of the preservation process by the National Film Registry.  The movies/films selected for 2006 included:

 

Applause (1929)

Helen Morgan starred as Kitty Darling in 1929’s “Applause”.  After working as a dancer, Kitty tries to make sure that her daughter, April (Joan Peers) doesn’t follow in her footsteps.

 

The Big Trail (1930)

Breck Coleman must lead a wagon train to the West.  John Wayne starred in this western.

 

Blazing Saddles (1974)

Bart (Cleavon Little) is the unlikely new sheriff in town.  What does the west have in store for him?  “Blazing Saddles” also starred Mel Brooks, Harvey Korman and Gene Wilder.

 

The Curse Of Quon Gwon (1916)

This silent short film is just over thirty minutes long.  Starring Violet Wong, “The Curse of Quon Gwon” was thought to be lost until part of it was recently discovered.

 

Daughter Of Shanghai (1937)

When Lan Ying Lin’s (Anna May Wong) father (Ching Wah Lee) is murdered, she tries to get to the bottom of it by infiltrating an human smuggling ring.  “Daughter of Shanghai” features Anthony Quinn in one of his early film roles.

 

Drums Of Winter / Uksuum Cauyai (1988)

This 90 minute documentary was created by Sarah Elder and Leonard Kamerling.

 

Early Abstractions 1-5, 7, 10 (1939)

This twenty-three minute silent short was created by Harry Smith.  Over the years selected musical scores have been added to the film.

 

Fargo (1996)

Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand in an Academy Award winning role), a pesky, pregnant police officer is on the trail of two criminals (played by Steve Buscemi and William H. Macy).

 

Flesh And The Devil (1927)

Greta Garbo starred in the drama “Flesh and the Devil”.  What will happen when Ulrich (Lars Hanson) returns home to find that his beloved Felicitas (Garbo) is now married to his friend Leo (John Gilbert)?

 

Groundhog Day (1993)

It’s the same day over and over again for TV Weatherman Phil Collins (Bill Murray).  Andie MacDowell also starred in this hit comedy.

 

Halloween (1978)

John Carpenter directed this classic horror film about Michael Myers, a killer who escapes from an asylum with murder still on his mind.  “Halloween” starred Donald Pleasance as Dr. Loomis and Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie.

 

In The Street (1948)

This documentary depicts life on the streets of Harlem and lasts just over 15 minutes.

 

The Last Command (1928)

Dolgorucki (Emil Jannings), a former General during the fall of Imperialistic Russia, has fallen on hard times.  While working in Hollywood, he agrees to work on a reenactment of the fateful coup.

 

Notorious (1946)

When Alicia (Ingrid Bergman) agrees to help agent Devlin (Cary Grant), will the pair fall in love or will fate intervene?  The critically acclaimed “Notorious” was directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

 

Red Dust (1932)

Clark Gable and Jean Harlow starred in this romantic drama.  Dennis Carson (Gable), an owner of a plantation, must contend with Vantine Jefferson (Harlow), who’s on the lam from the cops.

 

Reminiscences Of A Journey To Lithuania (1971)\

This hour and a half documentary by Jonas Mekas takes you on a journey through Lithuania.

 

Rocky (1976)

Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), an underdog boxer, gets a chance to fight the champion, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) during an exposition in Philadelphia.  1976’s “Rocky” won the Oscar for best picture.

 

Sex, Lies And Videotape (1989)

Ann (Andie MacDowell) is married to John (Peter Gallagher).  However John is having an affair with Ann’s sister, Cynthia (Laura San Giacomo).  Things get even more complicated when John’s friend, Graham (James Spader), comes to stay.

 

Siege (1940)

This ten minute documentary was created by Julien Bryan.

 

St. Louis Blues (1929)

It’s song and dance when Bessie Smith finds that Jimmy Mordecai is seeing someone else.  This sixteen minute short film also featured the Hall Johnson Choir.

 

The T.A.M.I. Show (1964)

The Teenage Awards Music International was filmed in California at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in October 1964.  The film, which runs just under two hours, features legendary performances by the Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, the Rolling Stones, Smokey Robinson and the Supremes.

 

Tess Of The Storm Country (1914)

Although Mary Pickford would star in a 1920s remake of the film, she originally starred in the title role in the 1914 version.  In this 80 minute movie, Tess must juggle her fight for her father’s innocence when he’s framed for murder and her love for Elias (William R. Walters) the son Frederick Graves (Harold Lockwood), a wealthy landowner, while helping Frederick’s young daughter, Teola (Olive Golden).

 

Think Of Me First As A Person (1960)

This documentary runs around ten minutes and was edited by George Ingmire.

 

A Time Out Of War (1954)

Two Union soldiers clash with a Confederate soldier when their paths cross on opposite banks of river.  But the human spirit prevails when each side agrees to a one hour truce.  “A Time Out of War” runs just over twenty minutes and starred Barry Atwater.

 

Traffic In Souls (1913)

This silent film starred Jane Gail as a woman who is investigating the kidnapping of her sister (Ethel Grandin) as part of the underworld of prostitution.
