12th Critics Choice Awards

 

The 12th Annual Critics Choice Awards were held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, CA on January 12th, 2007.  Plenty of the stars were out to honor the year’s best in film.  Who were some of the honorees?

 

Best Picture

Babel

“Blood Diamond”

“The Departed”

“Dreamgirls”

“Letter From Iwo Jima

“Little Children”

“Little Miss Sunshine”

“Notes On a Scandal”

“The Queen”

“United 93”

 

And the winner is:  “The Departed” starring Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson and Martin Sheen.  Directed by Martin Scorsese, “The Departed” tells the story of a cop (DiCaprio) and an associate of the mafia (Damon) who go undercover and infiltrate each other’s respective worlds.

 

Best Animated Feature

“Cars”

“Flushed Away”

“Happy Feet”

“Monster House”

Over the Hedge

 

And the winner is:  “Cars” featuring the voices of Owen Wilson and Paul Newman.  A hot shot roadster finds himself in Radiator Springs with a number of unusual characters.

 

Best Comedy Movie

“Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

“The Devil Wears Prada”

“For Your Consideration”

“Little Miss Sunshine”

“Thank You For Smoking”

 

And the winner is:  “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” starring Sacha Baron Cohen as Borat, a TV host from Kazakhstan who comes to America to film a documentary.

  

Best Documentary

“An Inconvenient Truth”

“Shut Up and Sing”

“This Film is Not Yet Rated”

“Who Killed the Electric Car”

“Wordplay”

 

And the winner is:  “An Inconvenient Truth” with Al Gore that highlights the effects of global warming.

 

Best Foreign Language Film

“Apocalypto”

“Days of Glory”

“Letters From Iwo Jima

“Pan’s Labyrinth”

“Volver”

“Water”

 

And the winner is:  “Letters From Iwo Jima” directed by Clint Eastwood.  The movie tells the story of the Japanese forces during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.

 

Best Family Film

“Akeelah and the Bee”

Charlotte’s Web”

“Flicka”

“Lassie”

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

 

And the winner is:  Charlotte’s Web” starring Dakota Fanning and featuring the voices of Julia Roberts and Oprah Winfrey.  The story tells of the triumphs of Wilbur, a pig who has an unlikely friendship with Charlotte, a spider.

 

Best Director

Bill Condon for “Dreamgirls”

Clint Eastwood for “Letter from Iwo Jima

Stephen Frears for “The Queen”

Paul Greengrass for “United 93”

Martin Scorsese for “The Departed”

 

And the winner is:  Martin Scorsese for “The Departed”

 

Best Soundtrack

Babel

And the winner is:  The soundtrack for the movie “Dreamgirls”

  

Best Acting Ensemble

Babel” starring Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt

“Bobby” starring Laurence Fishburne, Anthony Hopkins, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone

“The Departed” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen

“Dreamgirls” starring Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy

“Little Miss Sunshine” starring Steve Carell and Greg Kinnear

“A Prairie Home Companion” starring Kevin Kline, Lindsay Lohan, Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin

 

And the winner is:  “Little Miss Sunshine” starring Alan Arkin, Abigail Breslin, Steve Carell, Toni Colette, Paul Dano and Greg Kinnear.  “Little Miss Sunshine” tells the story of a family bent on entering their young daughter in a beauty pageant.

 

Best Actor

Leonardo DiCaprio as Danny Archer in “Blood Diamond”

Leonardo DiCaprio as Billy Costigan in “The Departed”

Ryan Gosling as Dan Dunne in “Half Nelson”

Peter O’Toole as Maurice in “Venus”

Will Smith as Chris Gardner in “The Pursuit of Happyness”

Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland

 

And the winner is:  Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin, the Ugandan dictator, in “The Last King of Scotland”

 

Best Actress

Penelope Cruz as Raimunda in “Volver”

Judi Dench as Barbara Covett in “Notes on a Scandal”

Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen”

Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada”

Kate Winslet as Sarah Pierce in “Little Children”

 

And the winner is:  Helen Mirren who portrayed Queen Elizabeth II in the days following the death of Princess Diana in “The Queen”.

 

Best Supporting Actor

Ben Affleck as George Reeves in “Hollywoodland”

Alan Arkin as Grandpa in “Little Miss Sunshine”

Adam Beach as Ira Hayes in “Flags of our Fathers”

Djimon Hounsou as Solomon Vandy in “Blood Diamond”

Eddie Murphy as “Thunder” Early in “Dreamgirls”

Jack Nicholson as Frank Costello in “The Departed”

 

And the winner is:  Eddie Murphy who played the singer/entertainer “Thunder” Early in the musical/drama “Dreamgirls”

 

Best Supporting Actress

Adriana Barraza as Amelia in “Babel

Cate Blanchett as Sheba Hart in “Notes on a Scandal”

Jennifer Hudson as Effie in “Dreamgirls”

Rinko Kikuchi as Chieko in “Babel

Catherine O’Hara as Marilyn Hack in “For Your Consideration”

Emma Thompson as Kay Eiffel in “Stranger Than Fiction”

 

And the winner is:  Jennifer Hudson who played Effie White, a member of the singing trio “The Dreams” in the musical/drama “Dreamgirls”

 

Best Young Actor

Cameron Bright as Joey Naylor in “Thank You for Smoking”

Joseph Cross as Augusten Burroughs in “Running With Scissors”

Paul Dano as Dwayne Hoover in “Little Miss Sunshine”

Freddie Highmore as Max Skinner in “A Good Year”

Jaden Smith as Christopher in The Pursuit of Happyness

 

And the winner is:  Paul Dano who played Dwayne Hoover in the comedy “Little Miss Sunshine”

 

Best Young Actress

Ivana Baquero as Ofelia in “Pan’s Labyrinth”

Abigail Breslin as Olive Hoover in “Little Miss Sunshine”

Shareeka Epps as Drey in “Half Nelson”

Dakota Fanning as Fern in “Charlotte’s Web”

Keke Palmer as Akeelah in “Akeelah and the Bee”

 

And the winner is:  Abigail Breslin who portrayed Olive Hoover in “Little Miss Sunshine”
